Bioactive Glass has been known for its excellent bioactivity (or
biocompatibility) and a range of successful applications replacing
tissues from middle-ear to dental defects.  
Bioglass(R) is based on
the well studied and published original "grand father" composition
45S5 .  A recent lecture by Dr. Larry Hench provided a 40-year
retrospective of the Bioglass(R) evolution with an imnortant shift
from tissue replacement to emphasis on stimulating tissue
re-generation (osteogenesis) using bioactive glasses.

While there are a variation of the original "grand father" 45S5  
composition, nearly all FDA approved products uses the original 45S5
composition which contains 45% silicon oxide and 6% phosphorus
oxide by weight, respectively.  XL Sci-Tech has developed a
proprietary technology for volume production of 45S5 bioactive glass
microspheres.  XL Sci-Tech is also capable of processing customer
supplied fritted bioactive glass powders into high quality bioactive
glass microspheres without changing surface chemistry or any
decrease in bioactivity.
